Reflexology

Pre-birth treatments

Reflexology is the perfect preparation for both partners when preparing for conception. It helps to induce deep muscle relaxation and relieve any stress and tension, cleansing the body of unwanted toxins and promoting optimum health. Regular treatments improve the female body’s ability to maintain a regular cycle, receive a fertilised egg and carry it to full term. Reflexology has also been shown to increase male sperm-count and mobility.

First trimester

Pregnancy can be an exciting but stressful time. The body is adapting to many, sometimes rapid, changes. Reflexology can help relieve both mental and physical tension, helping the body maintain a positive balance, easing headaches, morning sickness and fatigue.

2nd trimester

Many women enjoy the relaxation of reflexology in the less eventful second trimester whilst continuing to encourage the body towards an easier spontaneous labour.

3rd trimester

When the body’s circulation has to work so much harder, reflexology will help improve both cardiovascular and lymphatic circulation which in turn helps to relieve many ailments of pregnancy, such as water retention, itchy skin, constipation, mood swings and insomnia.
Many women have reflexology to encourage labour, especially if they are overdue. Reflexology stimulates the release of oxytocin, the hormone that starts uterine contractions. During labour, reflexology helps to keep the body relaxed and offers a natural pain relief. Women often report the calming effect of reflexology during contractions, which in itself can reduce the length of labour.

Assisted conception is an emotionally exhausting time and the high level of stress has a major physical effect on the body, depleting it of essential nutrients and tipping the delicate hormonal balance of the reproductive system. Reflexology helps the body to make the best use of nutrients and stimulates the lymphatic system enabling the body to better eliminate toxins.

Postnatal support (for the mother)

Once a baby arrives, parents are thrown into unusual routines and general exhaustion. Reflexology encourages and maintains normal function in the body whilst it adapts to more changes. Treatments naturally support the body, mind and spirit as it begins to return to a non-pregnant state. The ‘baby blues’, on day 3 or 4, are not uncommon in new mothers. Reflexology will calm and relax the body and help clear the surge of birthing hormones leftover from labour, alleviating the blues and increasing energy levels, both key to preventing post-natal depression. Reflexology can also help stimulate milk production, ease muscular tension and uterine contractions, promote good bowel function and help clear any remaining water retention from the legs or feet.
